Black Rose-Anthem

Black Rose is a very exciting project which was put together by two legends. Henrik Schwarz and Jesse Rose, both are recognised individually for their production and Dj/Live shows. The duo have made tracks in the past, however it wasn't until Jesse invited Henrik to his night at Panorama Bar, Henrik proposed, “Look should we try and do a back-to-back where I play live and you play records”. Subsequently, promotors were trying to book 'Black Rose' from then on.

The duo only really play together about 3 times a year, its a grind to setup, as well running labels and their very busy lives.

We have a 2 hr set which was recorded at the end of last year, will up soon, big file sorry. Watch this space

Yesterday marked the birth of Black Rose's first track, called anthem. Now readily available on sites such as beatport.

Ok, so I know we've been a bit lazy in terms of posts over here but trust us we have been working hard. With a bit of production underway and a whole lot of DJing going on there's some stuff in the pipeline that is hopefully worth waiting for.

In the mean time this is a live Techno set mixed by NAD & Arta at The Temple. Packed with a bunch of new tunes aswell as some older jems. This mix focuses on simple, long mixes and takes you on a 45 min ride rather than some megamix rollercoaster.

I just watched this video about a DJ school in Europe somewhere. Half way through I was about to exit when David Guetta's face pops up, so I continued to watch and turns out he gets into a taxi to the airport and flys to Russia to play a gig(on a Chartered plane). The cool thing is that along the way he produces a track that he plays at the gig he is playing at that night.

Not enough, infact barely any artists in hip hop write dope lyrics. It's sad but true. Jay-Z, he's different. This video highlights this. Not enough people even pay attention to lyricism anymore rather cheap hooks (normally in autotune). Listen to what Jigga says and how he flows so smoothly.

The song is actually from a sneaky lil mixtape called Brooklyn Soul. It was produced by Shuko & The Gunna back in '08 and is a collection of Jay-Z rhymes of Marvin Gaye beats. It's good, I recommend getting the whole thing.

The name 'Bag Raiders' is a household name these days amongst us all. The slow rise to the top was bought on by various singles including Fun Punch and Turbo Love. Mix Monday 45

It has been a while since we posted a Mix Monday and for that I am sorry. There is no genuine excuse for this laziness. However to make up for this void I have found a rather special little mix put together by Chicago boy James Curd. This is a guy that has been making music for years and is a truly passionate musician. His own production ranges from house to disco and even the occasional techno based track. He is an artist that hasn't exploded into the mainstream but it is very talented and I my opinion deserves more credit than he is paid.

This particular mix was put together about a month ago and includes a variety of quite contemporary dance tracks. Like his production the mix varies in musical styles but when I listened to the overall product everything fits together almost too well. There are some favourites in there to keep everyone happy, most notably "We No Speak Americano" as well as tracks from Fake Blood, Boy 8-Bit and Breakbot. This is then balanced with some more alternate and less known tracks. One to take note of is the James Curd remix of "It's Not My Fault" which was a track recorded by Lenny Kravitz and Mos Def for the Gulf Aid cause. It's a tune and a half and just takes the original to the next level.

Last week we gave you a small mix by one of our favourite DJ/producers, Boy 8 Bit. Over the weekend this Brit was granted the privledge and honour of the notorious Essential Mix. So Steve cancelled Creamfields, but for good reason. On May 10th 2010 Steve and his wife Isabel had a baby girl. Having their daughter on Monday and subsequently they named their newborn Monday-Lily.

Its good to see Steve holding his precious newborn so peacefully, it sort of looks like he just had the baby....

I love Pharrell. Always have, I think he is one of the most talented producers alive. Uffie on the other hand, I have never been that fond of. When I heard their recent collaboration titled 'Add Suv' I must admit I was pretty disappointed. It was jerky and didn't really flow like the majority of Uffie's work. However, then I stumbled across the Armand Van Helden remixes, and now were cooking. He gives it a great disco slice, not dissimilar to his Duck Sauce work. It's big, fun and very bouncy which makes it a great dancefloor tune. There's a vocal and club mix. This is the club mix AKA less Uffie equals bigger banger!

Today's Mix Monday comes from a fresh European producer called Rubix. Stepping on to the scene properly last year, over the past 6 months this single man army has moved onto the radar of top producers and DJs around the world like AIDs through Africa. With a mixture of styles this Amsterdam based talented individual has released originals and remixes and even remixes of his originals spanning across disco, house, dubstep and tech. He's now playing around Europe on a regular basis and recently featured on Laidback Luke's FG Radio Show. Not bad for a guy no one knew of this time last year.

This particular mixtape covers a range of genres similar to the production he has to date, which is quite broad. I starts of with a few old tracks, disco-based and then moves onto some more recent bassier disco house. It then tacks a turn towards the tech side of things and finshes off with some pleasent (and not too hard) dubstep tunes. Well put together, you can hear the time and effort put into this mix.

On the weekend I attended the Creamfields festival in Sydney. With the international branding behind this party relatively high expectations were placed upon this festival for its debut on Australian soil. With a pretty diverse and pretty boring all round line up an usual crowd attended. Not your average music lovers. The set up was all wrong with a shit small room where MSTRKRFT closed in what may as well have been a bath tub it was that hot and sweaty. The Bloody Beetroots, the headline act, had 'technical difficults' and ended up playing ONE song after an hour wait. I actually ended up having a pretty good day hiding over near the suprisingly small and overlooked Planet Hardware stage where I caught a variety of nice techno and house. Riva Starr was by far the highlight for me with an 90 set of pretty much all his own work put together flawlessly and with class. Unfortunately though, overall, this festival was a complete failure in my opinion as clearly rushed, unorganised and unprofessionally run event that could have worked.

Enough with my bitching. On to some GOOD music which is why we're all here. By now a lot of people have heard of the latest and greatest super-collab between Riton and Mehdi (not necassarily in that order), called Carte Blanche. The two came together to make and play good old disco house music. The way it should be. By not overworking stuff and keeping it simple but effective you have something which is pleasingly fun. Get down.

The two are embarking on their world tour as we speak so check out Riton or Dj Mehdi's myspace to see if they're gonna be in your neck of the woods.

Future Classic are a Sydney based group that have been catering for more musically educated audience in the disco scene. They're the guys that brought you Aeroplane, Classixx, Todd Terje, Joakim, Canyons and plenty more. They run a weekly party on Sunday afternoons down at the Tilbury in Woolloomooloo.

Starting this Saturday (1st May) they're launching a new party called 'Adult Disco'. This is going to be a weekly gig held at the Civic Underground. It's gonna be good! For all you kids out there that live on Aeroplane monthly mixs, wake up and check 'Too Many Sebastians' and wish you were Breakbot then this is the party for you. A-trak dropped this track a couple of weeks ago at the WMC in Miami. Everyone has been going crazy over it since, watching the youtube videos over and over, deciphering the sample and analysing the production. It’s pretty amusing just to sit back and watch the hype. These boys know what they’re doing.

Anyway, it was only so long before someone was gonna make a bootleg and get it out there. This cat, O-God, has done exactly that. Taking the original Boney M sample, snippets from when A-Trak dropped it live and a bit of work in Ableton with a few kicks and hey presto you got some Duck Sauce. Can’t wait for the real thing but in the mean time this will more than suffice.

Telonius is from one half of Munk, Gomma record label and in his own regard a very talented solo artist. The collection of artists signed to his amazing German label include WhoMadeWho (Denmark) , Munk (Germany), Telonius (Germany),HEADMAN (Berlin), Moullinex (Portugal), Phenomal Handclap Band (USA), DISKOKAINE (Vienna), The KDMS (London)along with others. He has a bunch of monthly mixes available that are well worth a look at. Today however I have a pretty damn special mix. It's his recent Winter Wipeout Mix which blew me away. It invloves 20 odd tracks over an hour which sounds more like 10 tracks that you don't want to end.

The mix starts of with a baleric/cosmic disco vibe and suddenly turns deep and dark and then gets housey to finish of with some classics which are mainly tribally influenced. I think the mixing is imaculate, you don't know when songs are starting or stopping, more just a progression of genres. Download this and see if you're not nodding.

Oliver Huntemann PLAY! 03 Live at Cielo, New York

He is a Bremen based DJ and is about to release his third mix compilation. Known as the Huntemann PLAY! series the first two were big and the compilations really reflect what he is playing currently.

Due out in May, entitled PLAY! 03 Live at Cielo, New York. This mix shows the inside of minimal techno today, and will also feature a previously unreleased track by Huntemann–"NYC (Keep on Playin')"–and a new collaborative effort with Dubfire, entitled "Fuego".

This week's Mix Monday is particularly special. Most weeks we have mixes from either the biggest DJ's around the world or local talent that we like/support. The majority of these mixes are a series of tracks slapped together often in a simple manner to showcase current tracks that that particular DJ likes. The mixing styles in these vary but are most of the time quite simply one track into another. This is something different.

I stumbled across this mix a couple of weeks back by a British group called The Diogenes Club. Unfamiliar with the act I downloaded the mix purely because the tracklist intrigued me. Upon listening to the mix I was quickly impressed and then blown away the more I listened. There's 47 tracks in an hour which sounds like one of those circa '05 mega/mash mixes. This is far from that. Through a combination of extremely clever track selection, looping, sampling and planned mixing this mix leaves you with something lasting. The transitions are so smooth with the majority of the time it near impossible to tell when one track starts and the the other stops. At many times there will be 2, 3 or even 4 tracks sitting ontop of one another seemlessly. Download this smooth disco synth journey and see if you're not wet.

Animal Language

The Mason Duo are repsonsible for the Animal language releases, these releases are a twist on all modern genres that aims to put the fun back into dance music. The Mason sound follows medolic methods that inspire the thinking man on the dancefloor. The label is heading in the right direction with support from Dj Hell, Mylo and Carl Cox.

Syncrom; is an Italo influenced tune. The tune features an 80’s style riff of epic proportions, bonded together with a slick groove that Moroder would’ve been proud of. Initial reactions from Mason’s own DJ sets is that Syncrom is completely laying waste to dance floors everywhere from Belgium to Brazil.

The double A side is another un-predictable left turn for Animal Language. A tribute to our black and white mammalian friends, ‘The Badger’, is about as funky as it is possible to make a record. Over the weekend Jack Beats, the DJ duo that has recently exploded, were given the task of mixing the legendary BBC Radio 'Essential Mix'. I was actually a little surprised that they were granted this privilege. Not that the boys don't have the talent or depth, simply because a year ago few people even knew the name Jack Beats. I was lucky enough to catch these guys on NYD this year at Sydney's Field Day. I was already quite familiar and fond of their work and very keen to see what they'd play. They certainly didn't disappoint playing a nice hard set. They were on a smaller stage behind the main stage but the Sydney crowd is obviously onto it cos a shit load of people turned out for the dusk set and the Jack Beats had a rave going on.

With a solid string of remixes and originals under their belt the boys are quickly becoming/have become a household name in the dance world. Their sound is a mixture of dubstep, electro, fidget. People often talk about their 'wobbly bass lines'. I was impressed with this mix for their track selection which is fresh and varied giving you a good idea of what they like and make. Personally I think they killed it. What do you reckon?

Whats that sound? was exactly what I thinking when I saw this interview with Afrojack.... Size records is taking on his new Ibiza bomb track inspired by Mr Steve Angello.....

1. For those people who might not know you, please introduce yourself…
Waddup, this is Afrojack, this time with a new sound.

2. How’s the year treating you so far?
I’ve been making music for the past 3 years professionally, going well so far!

3. Tell us about the new single. Pacha’s not somewhere you’d normally associate with acid…
Nope its not, Mr David Guetta asked me to play in Ibiza with him on the FMIF closing party, and figured I needed to make something that would fit in to Pacha, but a little bit too hard (I like that), then I thought hmmm there hasn’t been something like Steve Angello’s Teasing Mr Charlie for sooo long, and thought lets do something like that! And it’s not about the drug acid, but about the sound! The track worked its magic in Pacha Ibiza and it was even cooler Steve eventually asked me if he could release it on his label, seeing the inspiration came from there!

4. Will you be out in Ibiza this year? Where’s your favourite place on the island?
Yes!! My favourite places are Mambo, Pacha and the big Amnesia club, had some amazing times there especially in the last two, also DC10 used to be a killer party!! Too bad it’s closed, will be playing in Pacha and Eden this year for sure, all the rest I can’t say anything yet.

5. Everyone’s gearing up for Miami at the moment…what’s your take on the WMC?
This is actually the first year I’m doing some of the gigs there! I have made like a small track for WMC, but I’m not “trying” to make that anthem, I’m more interested in meeting my favourite producers and maybe hooking up with them in the studio, and of course some major fun parties, it’s like a big DJ field trip!

6. What have you got planned for the rest of the year?
I just got in my USA working permit so will do a lot of tours there, gonna fly a lot in Europe, and going back to Australia at the end of the year too, outside of that a lot of big studio sessions with big guys, and I’ve also started producing for pop artists which is really fun to do! That also gives me a fresh look on dance music which can inspire me if the four to the floor doesn’t do it for me one day..

7. Anything else you’d like to tell us about…?
Yes, soon there will be a reaaaally special studio session, going in with Mr Steve Angello himself!!

AFROJACK - PACHA ON ACID by sizerecords

Definitely a different sound, but as he said Teasing Mr Charlie needed a reworking of some kind. Also speaking of the WMC, all the artists usually get their tunes of the year ready for this. As this is the most influential festival of the year, in the dance world.

March 23rd marks the 25th anniversary, and with lineups like this.... tickets for delegates start at like $250 and that was 4 months ago, then flights, drinks.... pricey. But all these artists will probably play their newest and best work for the year at one or all of the events.

Dirty South has this ready for the WMC 2010.

This week's Mix Monday comes from a Sydney collab which is heading towards big things. Flight Facilities is the pairing of two Sydney producers who are talented and respected on their own accord, U-GO-BE and Jimmy 2 Sox. They pair who are both signed to the Bang Gang label met and quickly realised a common interest in their taste in music and all things similar. By putting their production skills and ideas together the duo realised few remixes last year, not too many but enough (and of a high enough quality) to create a stir. Their most recent piece of work is a track called 'Crave You' which is not even released yet and has gained much attention world wide. It's due out in March with a both of remixes. Definitely worth keeping an ear out for.

The mixtape is one they put out bout half way through 2009. I think the idea was to sort of showcase some tunes they liked and give people an idea of their sound and what to expect. I think it's very well crafted. Not tonnes of well known stuff but more an unique collection of tracks put together well.

January Promo Mix

Something new in 2010. We've had a little idea at Staying Sick. We figure there's so much new and good music constantly coming out. We want to share all of our favourites with you but then you run into trouble for posting songs in full form, or mp3's in too high a quality or tracks which haven't been released and rightly so as the artist have the rights to these and should be pissed about everyone getting something for free, even though unfortunately it's inevitable.

What we have in mind is a monthly Promo mix for you all. The aim of these mixes will be to showcase a bunch of new stuff which were into while also throwing in a couple of old favourites to keep it interesting. Each of these mixes will be recorded live to add an additional element of excitement (cos lets face it, any prick can pluck a perfect mix together on Ableton etc). These mixes will cross many genre boundaries as we like many genres. However, at the same time we aim to have the mixes flowing and fun.

The first mix we've done is actually not full of new tunes at all. Quite the opposite, we decided to choose mainly old tracks which we've liked for a long time with the exception of a few newbies to give you guys an idea of what we like and where we're coming from. So enjoy the first in many monthly promos.

Last year's Parklife festival in Australia was Aeroplane's debut appearance on the Australian scene and the lack of attention surrounding this Belgian duo was quickly turned around. What is remarkable about these guys is two things. Firstly, their production is amazing. Simple and not overdone their work is so powerful and musically sound. Their sound can be described as cosmic or balearic disco. This is the way forward in the electronic dance with the heavy, noisy, distorted beats becoming increasingly stale and repetitive. The second aspect which stood out to me was there live set. I was quite keen to catch these guys at Parklife and as equally excited to see what they'd play. The beauty of the music they play which obviously includes their own stuff is that although it may sound quite slow and subtle for dance music on your laptop speakers when heard in a club on a decent system and 10-20 bpm faster it suddenly turns into a very danceable vibe.

Now, for those of you who have somehow missed Aeroplane's Mix Charts over the last six months you are in for a royal treat. Back in August last year the boys released their first mix on Soundcloud. What these mixes aim to achieve is to showcase 10 songs each month that are new and obviously appeal to them. Through simple and long mixes these monthly mix charts do a fantastic job and showing new and well crafted tunes that fit into the Aeroplane style of music.

So here is the most recent mix in the collection. It's nothing short of amazing like the rest of them so enjoy.

Last night I got to catch the Jacked Crew going around Oz at the moment, the two dutchies and the yank.... (We Cant Be Stopped). Saw them at family in Brisbane, which is a weapon of a club. Highly suggest a checkout, if in the area. Sound, lights and setup was massive.... Hardwell played a very commercial set which I was not expecting, however it seemed to be his role. He definately was not what I was expecting, he reminded me of LBL. The main event was afrojack, he started with Pon da Floor and pretty much played his stuff, including his ghettoblaster. He is a massive man, but turns out to be more than I expected. His Djing is all on the fly, just dropping bombs all over and probably was the most excited man in the place, really liked his mixing. Very much like his radio 1 mix, except more cut up.... he also played the nicest Guetta Memories bootleg or remix, keep an eye out. Familiar faces included Tom Piper and Bobby Burns.

Wolfgang Gartner plays so hard its not funny. He started with his 5th Symph.... but the crowd thinned as he went on.

This week we're back to some local talent. Local as in Sydney and talent as in the creative disco producer D CUP. This mix I heard on Canadian DJ U-Tern's radio show 'One Day Later'. It's a weekly show that the Vancouver based DJ hosts. This particular mix was from the tail end of last year. U-Tern invited D CUP to do a little guest mix. The mix starts off with some older, slower disco tracks and then moves on towards some slightly harder more contemporary stuff keeping it original and fresh. I think it's a great demonstration of how the current disco/nu disco scene is so heavily influenced by tracks made 20/30/40 years ago.
Anyway D CUP himself was kind enough to send me a copy of this so just have a listen and you'll see what I mean.

It's back.

Welcome back to the mix monday series. 2009 saw a vast variety of sets, mixes and compilations brought to you by the Staying Sick team. Each week we will strive to bring you a broad spectrum of what is going on in the electronic world of music from techno to disco, house to electro, hip hop to breaks and everything in between. They hail from Newcastle, keen to write about these guys as their reviews and write ups seem to good to be true. They are residents at a night called Wax:On which is across various venues across the U.K. As a way of capturing the first 5-years as Wax:On residents, PEOPLE GET REAL were commissioned to put together a special CD to showcase a snapshot of their sets. Interesting choice of songs, all his tunes were chosen in threes and in the same key so his could quickly mash them. A couple of mistakes, but the main mistake caused by a Miami Horror bass player tuning his guitar over the top of the Riton s tune. Riton was so confused with what the hell the sound was until he realised. Played all the latest fat bass tunes, from Afrojack to Wolfgang Gartner.

Proxy

Only saw the start and got as far as Moby- I Love To Move In Here (Proxy Remix) which sounded sick. The crowd looked like they liked the sound. I heard Indian Film which I was happy about.

Dj Yoda

One of the reasons why I went... Very sick. Every 30 seconds he had a new snare or most of the time a whole new song in. Everything from Country Music to Hip Hop. Just one massive flow of tunes everyone knew.

Jack Beats

The crowd was seriously keen on these two. Jack Beats showed them their new aged fidget electro and the crowd responded. When Warp came on, the crowd thought they were in the Warp video.

Skream and Benga

Good intro, everyone knew what they were, but I thought it was good that Benga sort of MC'd at the beginning and warmed the crowd. Dubstep intro to Sydney was heavy, cool to see.

Fake Blood
Very Heavy set, after he finished so many people were mentioning their new favourite Dj is Fake Blood. If anyone is familiar with Fake Blood s new compilation ' Wax On Compilation Series', Vol.1 (Mixed By Fake Blood & People Get Real) then his Field Day Set reminded me of this compilation, a lot of tracks were played from here.

2manydjs Live
With a majestic Light show and Audio visual Component the guys played a standard 2manydjs Set, I think. Ticked all commercial boxes and hit a few deep sounds like desynchronised and Jack is Back, also the guys had just flown in from Melbourne. Within 20 minutes of their set Stef had already walked off the stage to sort out a sound problem, he loves to have perfect sound.

Here's a fun little mash-up that was mad by the Fool's Gold producer/DJ, Sammy Bananas. It's the combination of Justin Timberlake's song 'Damn Girl' which was produced by Will.I.Am and the Kid Sister Track 'Damn Girl'. I actually first heard Tom Wrecks, a Canadian DJ, paired these two songs up maybe two years ago in a mix he released. Sammy has sat down and done a proper edit which was used in recent "It's the mothering remix, Vol 3" compilation. It's a little bit cheesy but I think it's fun. Damn Girl!

Crookers Sound Loss

So for those who were watching The Crookers when their sound was lost, a massive boo was givin. This Boo echoed all the way to the Daily Telegraph who wrote an article in Wednesdays paper that read like this:

ITALIAN DJ duo The Crookers have hit back at claims their controversial set at Stereosonic was not a live performance.
After the sound went down during their headlining set inside the Royal Hall of Industries at Saturday’s massive music festival, the production pair were accused of not mixing their music.

"They lost the place in their CD and needed time to get back on track," a backstage source said.

They were booed heavily by the crowd and returned to the stage ten minutes later.

"The reason we lost the music is because you were too quiet. Get loud!" was the explanation given to the audience of over two thousand.

However the boys, DJ’s Phra and Bot, said today that it was a mixer malfunction and that they always perform live sets.

"It was simply a mixer issue, it overheated after running solid all day in a super hot and sweaty humid room," they told Confidential.

"We didn’t realise the main system was down because our stage monitors stayed on which was pretty funny, we where thinking why aren’t the crowd dancing.”

"As soon as we picked up the issue the mixer was changed so end of problem."

The Italian stallions are currently on break in Byron Bay before playing Adelaide on Saturday.

Australia’s onelove have selected The Crookers to mix one disc of their upcoming Sound Machine compilation in cahoots with local DJ stars Matt Nugent and Grant Smillie.

So a few weeks ago we had A-Trak talking to Steve Angello about ‘Gypsy Wedding Music’. The track he was reffering to is his recent Flonko which he made with his brother. I love the way he summed it up. Two versions were released of the track and both rely heavily on some crazy clarinet samples over big bold kicks to bring this ‘Gypsy Wedding Music’ feeling and sound.

This is another similar track I stumbled across the other day. If Flonko is gypsy wedding music then Klezmer is a ‘Bar Mitzvah House Party’. I wonder whether A-Trak would play it..? I love the idea of these elements being brought in a dance track, especially when it’s executed well.

There is nothing 'new' that motivated this post. I have no urge to give you something new. The nature of blogging is to share thoughts, music and other rubbish that you feel is necessary for other people to know about. In that case, the sole reason for this post - one of my all-time favourite songs. I don't care if you do or don't endorse it, remix it or even tell people about it. If you did, great. I just think that if this particular song had the power to change the way I listened to and played music, then it should be worth sharing. If only everyone would froth over this melody. As it happened, Chris Martin from Coldplay did. He specifically asked Florian and Ralf if he could use the riff for their song 'Talk'.

Please froth over this. I would like you to. I would like you to embrace one of the greatest electronic songs ever. Sure, that's just my opinion. I don't think it could be any more appropriate though. What a fitting title - Computer Love. This title suggests that these geniuses were way too ahead of their time. Thirty years on and here we are, mounting our computers and other technological software. I use this software as a vehicle for getting this song across to you and watching porn. The latter more discretely of course. Ahh blogging...how irrelevant that last comment was and still it was read by the unknown.

I read somewhere recently that Simian is like the Chemical Brothers of our time. I think this not far from the truth. Their production style is unique and changing which gives them an element of longevity. Their love and use of traditional synths is always evident and through the accompinent of some solid vocalists they have mad some pretty powerful and lasting songs (Hustler anyone?)
The one that stood out to me the day I got their most recent album was Cruel Intentions. I love everything about it, the stong vocal sung by the big Beth Ditto from The Gossip, the lyrics, the sound, the smell, the taste. This is why I was understandably excited when a lil remix package was released. I like pretty much all the remixes on the release, some more than others but also like the fact that they are all quite different from one another. These are my two favs.

N.A.S.A. is more a concept than an actual artist. North America/South America (N.A.S.A.) is the idea of combining multiple music influences from two large and broad continents. Earlier this year the creative collaboration of Squeak E. Clean and DJ Zegon released their debut piece of work entitled ‘The Spirit Of Apollo’. This was essentially a 17-track compilation of a huge variety of collaborations. By calling upon artists ranging in music styles, influences and cultures and pairing up unusual duos, trios and even quartets the idea is to bring closer cultures through music. The result is a very diverse and often segmented album. This is neither good nor bad. To start off with the line up of artists is pretty breathtaking with over 30 artists contributing to the cause there is no lack of talent. We’re not talking no-names either with some of the hottest artists the American continents have to offer. The album definately has more powerful moments than others. Sometimes the different influences on a track work extremely well together, often where unexpected. However not every track meets this hard to attain goal. If you had to boil it all down you could call this album a ‘hip-hop’ album. That’s where you’d most likely find it in the CD store (do they have those anymore?).

The the most recent release from the innovative pair is a ‘mixtape’. Tanning On The Moon is an hours' worth of tracks compiled by the two and then mixed by DJ Zegon. The tracklist is quite broad and follows a similar concept of combining often very varied musical styles. This is again executed with a considerable level of success. Not the most flawless or flowing mix but rather a collection of almost 60 tracks and acacpellas both old and new this mix is fun and friendly and does a largely good job of combining influences from across diverse range of cultures. Whether this brings them closer together culturally, musically or otherwise I guess we'll have to wait and see.

2009 has seen evolution in many fields, including the above new 27" Imac, David Guetta also has had a career changing year.

With the Oz summer starting to climb in temperature, a few personal around the world are climbing harder. Just wanted to acknowledge the latest poll around the world. David Guetta closed at Number 3 in Dj polls. With a massive year he got an album out, 'One Love', also collaborated with the biggest including kelly Rowland, Akon and The Black Eyed Peas. Why he did it, as he has most of Europe under his wing already. The next frontier is obviously the urban hip hop culture in the US. Tying the electronic and urban culture s together seems impossible but the man for the task, is Guetta himself.

He seems like a pop queen himself but Guetta himself knows talent when he sees it. Mentioning the Dutch Afrojack as the 2009 breakthrough DJ/Producer and stating James Zabiela as the most underrated Dj in the world. Some people take his stuff the wrong way, purely because of the medium being used to sample his stuff, the radio. I hear people saying Sexy Bitch or etc. But if you jump onto itunes and check out the rest of his new album, you can still hear his roots, its like Joachim and Guetta at Redlight festival 2007 all over again.

Guetta has got a spot at Future Music 2009 and as its already on its third release, some must be attending to hear sexy bitch.

Erol Alkan is one talented musician. He just came out to Australia for the first time and opened many Aussies eyes to what Europe has been salivating over for almost a decade. What makes this man so successful and has helped him acquire a cult following is his true and devoted passion for music. He has released very few originals (independently) but has produced a tonne of stuff collaborating with a numerous and diverse range of artists. He has a few remixes which again range greatly in style. The beauty of the remixes is the subtle use of simple production executed cleverly. This has left him with a small collection of potent and lasting remixes.

His recent tour down-under was received very well as he bounced around the country with the bunch of other DJs playing Parklife in each of the capital cities. One of the unique aspects of his tour was that he played two sets in each city. So while each DJ had one time slot at Parklife he had two separate ones on two different stages. The idea behind this was Erol's recent Disco 3000 venture. This is a style of music that can't be easily defined but by the name suggests there is a definite disco element with a futuristic approach. So he played a regular festival style set which was still very well put together with a pile of big electro/house/tech songs and ALSO played a 'Disco 3000' set.

At the end of last year Erol released the first part of his Disco 3000 series and people began to stir. The underground scene hopped onto it quickly and music boofs started talking. Without a tracklist countless blogs/forums tried to pinpoint a complete tracklist. I still haven't seen a complete accurate one to date. Erol Alkan's Resident Advisor Podcast (RA171) was re-released recently as part 2 of the Disco 3000 series. A similar thing has happened with the tracklist this time with Erol saying it's "coming soon" people have from all over have tried to decipher the mash of tracks.

I rate this mix for two main reasons. Firstly, its a collection of unknown tunes which creates a element of freshness and suspense that often mixes lack or more often loose after a short period of time. Secondly the alternate style of mixing keeps the mix interesting and also showcases Erol's amazing ability to somehow make two opposite songs sit side by side. Just download it and see what I mean.

The disco house train has left the platform and is gaining speed. In recent times I have blabbed about how the current electronic music scene is leaning back towards some of it's earlier roots of disco and house. Well it's now clearing evident with the proof of current production that disco house is becoming increasily popular. This is a good thing in my eyes/ears as I'm a big fan off this energetic, fun, dance music. So hear are a few that have caught my attention recently.

This is a track that I heard Aeroplane DJ's play at Parklife and it went off. Their set was fun and had a great party vibe. This was one of the many nu-disco driven tracks played. Don Diablo's work seems to vary greatly in style and substance. This is definately some of his better stuff and shows what he is capable of.

Youth Speed Trouble Cigarettes (Don Diablo Remix) - Cassius

An artist that I'm a big fan of haven't given due props on Staying Sick is His Majesty Andre. He's an English born and based producer/DJ that has been around for ages and from some reason doesn't seem to gain much attention outside of Europe, whcih he should. His style can't be pigeon holed as his music is based around careful, clever and clear production. This is one of his more energetic disco house remixes that he seems to be keen on currently. In My Eyes (His Majesty Andre Remix) - Burns

I first heard the Riva Starr remix of this Malente track in a set. I then copped the single and discovered there's a unusual drop off about two thirds of the way through the song. This GlowTape! edit covers it right up by creating a sneaky lil 30 sec build up (at the 3:18 mark) that actually adds to the song by helping breaking it up a bit!

The 26 year old music producer, Claes Rosen has been around since the early 90s. The man from Sweden is a man of many melodies. He is probably best know in these parts (Oz)for his Pryda-Shadows remix. Just wanted to share, as this is his new one, and its abit more disco house than his other stuff, however the rolling melodies are still evident. The artwork created for his releases are very similiar to the above picture, tranquil.

This week’s Mix Monday is a slightly different flavour with a mixtape from the North Carolina born and bred rapper J Cole. This is real hip hop. Currently the hip hop scene at crossroads. With shrinking budgets, music executives, resting on their laurels, search out the next YouTube sensation with a catchy hook and dance move in order to amass digital single sales. While many artists have tried to break through despite an industry melt down, few have been met with critical praise. Looking to succeed where his contemporaries have failed, J Cole (born Jermaine Cole) brings promise of a new day in hip hop music.

It's been said that the 'golden days' of hip hop are long gone and not coming back. This is a statement that I have tried to deny although it seems increasingly true with the motives and in turn music that is being placed in front of us. Well J Cole is something different. He's not about making a quick buck, rather taking time and effort to get to where he wants and plans to keep going. After two mixtapes J Cole is now the first sign-ee of Jay-Z's brand new record Label, Roc Nation. If that's not a big deal I don't know what is.

The first mixtape, The Come Up, was released in 2007 and with J Cole now living in New York he began to get noticed. He rapped over old classic hip hop beats that had influenced him while also making his own music from scratch. He is a true lyricist saying that his biggest influence would have to be Tupac for his content but lyrically he admired and studied the likes of Master P, Nas, Eminem, Canibus, Royce, Jay-Z and Biggie. Two years (March 2009) later he dropped The Warm Up and then got signed by the Jigga man. Big stuff. He featured on Jay-Z most release studio release The Blueprint 3. This is the mixtape that got him signed.

Lovers of the next-generation of electro and fidget are more than catered to with acts like Fake Blood(sorry again), The Proxy, Sinden, Jack Beats while house and tech fans get a solid representation of DJs that includes Fred Falke, Sebastian Leger, Nic Fanciulli.

An honourable mention that DJ Yoda will be there, DJ Yoda is a pioneer of Audio-Visual Djing and has transformed clubbing as we know it, throwing down styles as diverse as Hip-Hop, Funk, Baltimore Club, Drum n Bass and even Country music, all cut-up with a awe-inspiring selection of film, TV show and You Tube visuals that elevate his sets to the uniquely sublime. Hopefully they bring the visual part into the Domain, as in the last year Yoda has had many achievements including;

-Performing with Lily Allen providing exclusive visuals
-DJ’d to packed-out clubs everywhere from Beijing to New York, when a promoter wants a club full they call this Guy
-Performed alongside the likes of Amy Winehouse, Mark Ronson and Fatboy Slim.

At last weekend Parklife I was lucky enough to catch the Serato King 'A-Trak'. He played a pretty mixed set starting out with some large electro tunes. About thirty or so minutes in he played a bit of a hip hop medley including oldies like Simon Says, Nuthin' But A "G" Thang and Dead Prez's Hip Hop. After this he sort of chopped and changed between a range of songs and styles. Then just when he had the crowd in his hand after his Daft Punk Robot Rock beat juggle he dropped Duck Sauce's "aNYway". Although not everyone in the gurning crowd recognised it, it certainly got a response with people fist punching to the disco house bomb. Tune.
Well now here's the video which is fuckin gold if you ask me. It's what the song makes me envision. I wanna learn this routine and bust it out in a club!

Calvin Harris's second studio album titled 'Ready For The Weekend' has recieved a positive and encouraging amount attention since it dropped in late August. Doing a nice job musically and otherwise following up his debut chart topper this album quite similar in style and if anything probably a bit less pop and slightly more electro. Although it still contains a large amount of radio friendly tracks. As with his last album a lot of the hype has been aided by the singles and remixes that come hand in hand. With 'I'm Not Alone' and 'Ready For The Weekend' getting reworked by every big name under the sun. I've included one of my favourite tracks of the album which is bouncy and fun.

This clip is pretty sick. It's the world's first human synth! When it all comes together towards the end you'll be impressed.

I've got two brand spanking new tracks for you. So new I only have radio rips to offer. The first is a track which Busy P played and clearly rated at Parklife. Busy P said earlier in the year that A-Trak's remix of Kilometer was the 'Remix of the Year'. Well this is his lastest one and Annie Mac obviously loves it too. It's more big room electro style than his previous work but does a great job at creating yet another different and substainal track.

The Simple Things is an art project which was inspired by the creative individuals Takashi Murakami and Pharrell Williams. The idea behind the work how we overlook the simple things in life, hence the title. Pharrell choose seven of his most cherished items which are individually worth next to nothing and then made the items out of the earth's most precious stone and metals. This is supposed to be ironic as these are the things that we overlook but truly care for. Pharrell says it all better. He is such an intelligent forward thinking human and still remains so grounded. He often blesses his good fortune but you never reach heights like he does without something special.

This clip showcases Pharrell's intellect even if he is interviewed by a complete spastic. He thinks on another level. This is the type of person who inspires... I once heard him asked
“Would you say you set trends?”
He replied.
“I escape trends.”

So you like a good party? How about the Best Party Ever?! Yeah, sounds good. It is.
Toecutter is an underground Sydney based DJ has been in the scene for over a decade now. Not conforming to any one style this fellow has produced a range of stuff in his time, a lot of it more swayed towards the hardcore scene. A track he made a lil while back has received a bit of attention and those crazy Bang Gang boys have picked it up. Now, being released on the Bang Gang 12" label is the original along with a diverse collection of remixes from local and international producers.

Here's what the interesting man that is Toecutter had to say about it himself:
"I've been doing my thing my whole life! I was pretty surprised that they asked me to release 'Best Party Ever'. I think they liked the hook and were like 'Well, this COULD be great, but it's a little RED LINED!'...so we touched it up a bit. You should hear the early mixes of it. It was like Roule Records but made on a harpsichord - jarring and mechanical! I am really pleased to meet these guys cause they are sweet-AS, and a lot more open-minded than I thought they would be!

Here is the original piece of work which is very unique with quite a few chops and changes. This is accompanied by the Perth kid Shazam's remix who, like of late, has produced another quality nu-disco take on things!

Local Sydneyman, Beni, has started going places. It's not as if he wasn't earlier, he has simply started gaining the recognition he deserves. His latest EP has been picked up by the Kitsune kids as was his last one, My Love Sees You. This has in similar fashion led the track to a string of remixes by some solid players. Amongst them, Alex Gopher (who he has worked with and remixed before), Havard Bass, Jori Hulkkonen and fello Aussie boys Andy & Ohh Wee. I've decided to include the Melboune boys remix as it's my favourite, although, it's a solid little remix package without a dud in the bunch. Worth the purchase.

I had to include this music video. I only saw this the first time the other day and it made me go have another listen, somehow I hadn't even noticed that fun-boy Sam Sparro does the vocal.

This video is gangster. The 17/70 year old b-boy in the red pants is as real as they come. It's refreshing to see a dance video that ISN'T utter shite, its not the budget just the ideas that make videos like these!

On the long weekend the Parklife tour managed to tear through three capital cities in three days. The middle of the mayhem was an overcast Sunday in Sydney. With a diverse and pretty deep line-up there was a lot to choose from and a range on offer to keep most happy. One of the first sets I saw on the day was in the afternoon, when there was about half an hour of sunshine which was all the day had to offer. The music that was beening spun was that of the Aeroplane Dee-Jays.

Aeroplane which is actually two guys, Vito De Luca and Stephen Fasano, are from the friendly neighbour of Europe, Belgium. These two guys have been pumping out work solidly now for a couple of years and are a favourite amongst many. I've often heard people try and critise the work of these talented two labelling there music as boring and not 'dance' music. Thats bullshit. The music these two have been producing may not be hard dance music, it's far from it. That's not the aim here. Through showing a new and fresh sound upon us Aeroplane have played a vital role in the current shift towrds more musically creative and melodic disco style music which seems to be influcing the entire dance scene currently.

The set they played was not only great musically I felt they did one of the best jobs on the day and playing right to the audience. With a very appropriate style, tempo and mixing the crowd seemed to be loving the late afternoon disco-house set. They weren't playing a tonne of their own stuff but rather a collection of some more disco/house and upbeat fun electro like Duck Sauce!

This set is a "30 minute mix" (it's actually 36) by the two is comprised entirely of there own workings. A bit slower and relaxed than the live set I witnessed this does a suberb job in showcasing the guys talents.

With the southern hemisphere warming up for the summer season the opposite is happening up top. To finish of the party season there was big festivals all over. One of the biggest would have to have been Creamfields with a ridiculous line up over two days from literally the cream of the crop from every corner of the globe. There were a few Americans there and amognst them was the big Dave Spoon. He played a well rounded set with a balance of not overly commerical crowd pleasers (excluding 'Riverside') such as the Afrojack remix of 'Cool' which has started getting some solid recognition. This paired with some deeper, darker tech tunes which is clearly what he lends to results in a elvoving and entertaining set.
